The Singapore Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract to Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) for the production and supply of the Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV).

The Next Generation AFV will replace the ageing ULTRA M113 AFV which has been in service since the early 70s. The Next Generation AFV will provide our armoured forces with enhanced firepower, protection, mobility and situational awareness.

The SAF's Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle: Enhanced Firepower, Mobility and Situational Awareness

The Next Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) will be the mainstay of the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) mechanised forces, operating alongside the Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle, to fulfil the SAF's operational requirements.

Developed together with the Defence Science and Technology Agency and our local defence industry, the Next Generation AFV will provide our armoured forces with enhanced firepower, protection, mobility and situational awareness.

Initiated in 2006 to replace the ageing ULTRA M113 AFV which has been in service since the early 70s, the delivery of the Next Generation AFV will begin in 2019. (Sing Mindef)

    1. well the m113 is actually a track armoured personnel carrier(apc). but i do agree with you that replacing an apc with afv is kinda weird. they already have the bionix which is at the same class as this new generation afv.

      Hapus
    2. Bionix is an ifv while the newer is afv i guess this will be the lead vehicle for the mechanised infantry and various units except for amour which is the tank of course

      Hapus
    3. agreed. there not much different between tje bionix and afv to be honest except that bionix armour is a little bit better than the afv.

      Hapus
    4. I think the afv armour is much more stronger as the vehicle is bigger and thicker plus it is developed after the bionix so it has stronger protection. It also has higher firepower compared to the bionix with a bigger gun with higher caliber

    1. the afv main role is to transport troops and give cover fire if needed. the ifv on the hand, is to support tanks and mechanised division but can also transport troops. not much different to be honest.

  6. Ribuan terimakaseh luqman, some thing i learned. I just wonder they have terrrex and bionix now this, why have many types?

    1. you're welcome. well first of all terrex is same like afv. they're both field taxies and will provide cover fire for the troop. terrex is wheeled while afv use tracks. both wheels and tracks have their pro and con but they compliment each other weaknesses. bionix on the other hand is an ifv than usually joint forces with the tanks in the vanguard and ifv usually equip with anti tank weapons.

  7. Hi luqman, as you said, Bionix is an IFV and this is an AFV, what's Terrex falls class into? As for those who is new to these, a mechanise brigade, is for mobility and fire power ?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. terrex fall in the class of apc. mechanise brigade is for mobility and support. while, tanks are in armoured brigade. armoured brigade is more to firepower as they will push the enemy back or punch a hole in their defense and after that the mechanised brigade comes in to clean up the rest of the enemy left after the armoured brigade have gone forward.

      Hapus
    2. guys fyi, terrex has a characteristic that others dont have, its an amphibious capability.

      Hapus
  8. Wow, thank you Luqman for the information, much appreciated, now i abit clear, why some army unit is mechanised or armour brigade, otherwise, what i see just tanks!!!, thank you again

    1. no problem. happy to help.

    2. The terrex is an infantry carrier vehicle (icv) used mainly by the army's infantry units. There are other units that uses it like engineers, medics for evacuation and a command vehicle. It is armed with RWS (remote weapon station) either 12.7mm mg or 7.62mg or 40mm greanade launcher or 40mm together with either mg. Another infantry man can mount a gmpg at the hatch.so the terrex is an infantry transporter. The bionix is an IFV (infantry fighting vehicle) it is operated by the singapore armour and armour training institute. The AfV is mostly likely to be operated by multiple units including armour supposedly as the lead fighting vehicle well except for tanks. We will find out soon which units will operate the afv by 2020 as the production starts at 2019

  9. Hi Benjamin and Luqman, it seems the conflict in yemen and syria, the tanks a being chewed by anti tank missile. Most of them does not reactive or active protection.
By looking around south east asia, many AFV/IFV ( main MBT )are not protected by it. How does an armour unit survive an ATGM, by camouflage and mobility? Just curious.

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. well the atgm are created to destroy tank so no possible way to survive it except active protection. even active protection have its limitation such as it cant counter multiple projectiles. the best way to counter it is to have your infantry control the perimeter around 5-6km from the tank as this is the maximum effective range of atgm. in case of yemen and syria, they left their tanks alone right in the middle of the desert without any infantry support and the result is like what you see in the news(kaboom!).

      Hapus
  10. Yea, as cluless as i am in tank warfare, im just curious, looking atvthe footage, why just park a tank in the open and expect it not to be targeted in an open conflict.
It must he basic of a tank commander to find a hide or at least camouflage it
